Super Easy Valentine's day cards kids can craft

Celebrate this year’s Valentine’s Day by making cards with your kids.  I have some super easy Valentine's day crafts to share that let your kids have fun while making cute cards for their loved ones.

Valentine’s Day cards kids can make:

Fingerpainted hearts card: This activity is great for toddlers.  Simply roll out a sheet of paper and hand them some paint and let them feel free to paint away!  Once the paint is dried, I cut out heart shapes and we glue them onto a card.

Coffee filter hearts card: Using dot markers (or bingo dabbers), stamp colors onto a coffee filter.  Once dried we cut out hearts shapes and glued them onto our cards.

My kids had such fun making this Valentine's day craft.
The proud mommy in me is so impressed with how good their writing is getting (3 yrs old)

Painted hearts card: This simple card is so easy but so cute. Draw hearts all over the card and then give kids some watercolor paint and have them paint in the hearts.  So easy and great fine motor practice as well.

I love you to pieces card:  make this card by shredding paper and then pasting it onto a separate piece of paper.  When the paper is all filled with scraps, cut out a heart shape and glue the heart onto a card.  Add the words "I love you to pieces".

W is for Winter learning with letter crafts

Teaching the letters of the alphabet is always a favorite of mine.  One great way to engage kids in letter learning is to give them activities that create letter crafts.  Making a craft for each letter of the alphabet helps kids notice similarities and differences in the way the letters are formed and that each letter makes different sounds.  Today we are looking at the letter W, specifically W is for Winter.

fun alphabet craft for W using marshmallows

For this craft I cut out the letter W out of construction paper and gave the kids a small bowl of mini marshmallows.  Most kids are suckers for anything that involves food, so they are usually very excited to participate.   I tell the kids that we are going to pretend the marshmallows are snowballs and we are going to stick them onto our W to represent Winter.  Next I have the kids take a bite out of a marshmallow and eat that half and then stick the other half onto the W.  Because the marshmallow is so sticky NO GLUE is needed!  Such yummy fun!

Valentine's day worksheets and activities for kindergarten

Today I want to talk about my Valentine's day unit, that I use with my Kindergarten students.  It is made up of printable Valentine's day worksheets and activities that help make the day special.   It can be found at my TPT store here.

Valentine's day worksheets and activities for kindergarten-tpt unit

I love to celebrate the holidays with my students and one of the ways I do this is to create centers that incorporate the holiday theme, in this case, it's Valentine's day. Changing things up a bit keeps them engaged and curious and excited to try out the new centers.

Some of the curriculum connections included in this unit are:

  • Alphabet skills -matching letters
  • Alphabet skills- putting letters in alphabetical order
  • Matching upper and lower case letters
  • Number sense-counting
  • Copying and extending patterns

One of the favorite activities included in this package, is the ABC cut and paste worksheet.  To do this worksheet the kids cut out hearts with letters on them and then glue them in the correct Alphabetical order.  I have included two versions of this activity, a simple one and a more complex one to challenge the kids.

Printable Valentine's day worksheets and center activities

Today it was all about the love!  L.O.V.E. dice to be more specific.  Today in my small group of kindergarten students we played a game that is included with in my Printable Valentine's day worksheets.  When I work with my small group of students I often use literacy and math center activities that also include a theme, in this case it was Valentine's day.

Printable Valentine's day worksheets-literacy and math activities-coloring

To play this game, I have the students take turns rolling a letter dice that has the letters L, o, v, e on it.  We then read our letters out loud and then color in the matching hearts.  If someone rolls a heart they missed a turn and the person who gets all their hearts colored first is the winner.  The students love this game and I often hear a lot of "can I play next"?  For those students who can easily recognize the letter they have to tell me the letter sound or a word that starts with that letter.

The game pieces (including the dice) can be download from my Valentine's day literacy and math activities for prek and kindergarten from my teacherspayteachers store.

You can see it here in my store

Building fine motor skills by making 3-D playdough bugs

Play-dough!  I have to admit I love play-dough!  It's a great tool for building fine motor skills and muscles.  I love to squish the dough through my fingers and then mold a simple form and then squish it and start again!  My kiddos also LOVE play-dough.  They would play with it every day if I left it out but then my house would be covered with little dried up balls of multicolored crumbs!  So I try my best to bring it out as often as I can.

Usually I just let the kids create freely and explore what they can make with the play-dough but sometimes I provide them with play-dough mats that challenge them to create specific items.

Other times I invite them to create their masterpieces by using a variety of craft materials.  The following are some fun materials that make a great addition you can they can include in your creations:
  • gems stones
  • Popsicle sticks
  • googly eyes
  • tooth picks
  • buttons
  • feathers
  • sequins
