Build fine motor skills by making shapes with Wikki Stix

Have you ever played with Wikki Stix?  They are so much fun and they are great for building fine motor skills and for learning activities!  You can bend them into all kinds of shapes and designs and they stick to things without having to add glue so there is no mess.  But the best part is they are re-useable and can be used over and over again!  Today the kiddos played with the Wikki Stix and made shapes with them and stuck them on the window.

Literacy and fine motor activities using wikki stix to make shapes

At school, I will have the kids stick the Wikki stix onto the white board.  My students just love to use Wikki stix and they enjoy when I give them challenges.  In our small group time,  I will give them tasks like make a square using only 2 Stixes, make a small, medium and large circle, etc.

Things you can do with wikki stix:

  • make shapes
  • make pre-printing shapes
  • make your name
  • make numbers and letters
  • make pictures
  • make sight words
There are so many ways to use them!

Painted mugs made with sharpies for Valentine's day

Celebrate this year’s Valentine’s Day by having your kids make painted mugs made with sharpies.  Kids crafts make great Valentine's day gifts as after all there is nothing better than getting a homemade Valentine.

Directions to make a painted mug:

To make our painted mugs we bought some mugs from the dollar store and used Elmer's Painters pens to draw a picture and add some writing.  We let our mugs dry for a  few house and then to set the paint I baked them in the oven for 30 minutes at 400F and then let them cool in the oven until they were cool to the touch.  I've hand washed them since and the paint has stayed on so here's hoping that it was enough and the paint will stay on for a very long time.  I think these cups would be a great gift for Valentine's day, mother's day, father's day or grandparents day!  Who doesn't like homemade gifts?

I wanted to update this post and let all my readers know that the paint on the mugs has chipped a bit over time even with only hand washing.  The mugs we did use were from the dollar store and were already sealed with a gloss.  If we sealed our drawings with an acrylic sealer that should probably have done the trick.  I think we would have had more success if we used a ceramic mug that was not sealed (eg. not glossy).  You can buy these mugs in various craft stores or online.  My other suggestion would be to make the mugs strictly decorative pieces that only need occasional hand washing.

How to make a fluffy snowman from shredded paper

This week on the weekly kids co-op, Housing a Forest posted a how to make a fluffy snowman from shredded paper.  I love how the shredded paper gives the snowman texture.  What an easy way to recycle scrap paper and it is so easy, your kindergarten and preschool students can finish the craft independently.  Make sure you head on over to the original post for all the directions.
