Fun name activities and printables for preschool and kindergarten

Today I wanted to talk about some fun name activities and printables for preschool and kindergarten students.  I had previously posted about my learn to write your name activity booklet and you can read all about here in this post.   But this week I have been busy drawing and updating it so that now the booklet includes a cute graphic on each page that can be colored.

My kiddos were having fun working through it today.  They are fairly competent at writing their names now but it was good practice.

This booklet is great for preschoolers but it also is great practice for kindergarten students.  In fact I have used this booklet during the first few weeks of Kindergarten when we work on name recognition.  I would have the students come in find their booklet and then complete one practice page.  It's a great start to the day and they quickly get into following this routine.  Many students will come to Kindergarten unable to recognize their name nor print their name.  Parents often ask me what can they do to prepare their preschool aged child for Kindergarten and I always recommend that they start by teaching them to recognize and print their name (as well as recognizing and printing the alphabet).  It is such a useful building block to learn to read.  Kids are typically motivated and interested in their name, which is why my kiddos write their name on EVERYTHING.  By working with students names and then eventually their friends names, they soon realize that a string of letters put together can become a word.  Then it is just a matter of learning to recognize those strings of letters as different words (sight words).

I have also used this booklet as an intervention activity.  Sometimes Kindergarten students or even Grade 1 students need a bit more practice.  These books work great as an intervention activity as it is easily pulled out and ready to go.  Parent volunteers and Educational Assistants can also work with a small group of students using these practice pages.  Teachers could even send home this booklet as a homework activity.

You find the learn to write your name booklet in my tpt store hereIt is one of my bestsellers so if you have already purchased it please download it again (for free) to get the latest version.

My kiddos turn 5!

So a couple weeks back my kiddos turned 5!  I'm still in shock maybe that's why this post is so delayed! Ha!  The years go by so quickly it's hard to believe that it's already been 5 whole years!  Birthdays are always a big deal around our house.  My kiddos talk about their birthday party plans throughout the whole year.  They repeatedly plan who is coming, what the cake is going to look like, what they are going to eat, etc.  Now being boy/girl twins it has been increasingly harder to coordinate their desired themes into one big party but we do our best.  I think they have never known anything different so it doesn't bother my son that half of the decorations are pink and frilly nor does it bother my daughter that there are car posters and flags plastered on the walls.  Sounds alittle chaotic now doesn't it, I guess sometimes it is.  This year my daughter wanted a hello kitty themed birthday and my son wanted a hot wheels themed birthday.  No problem, right?  Well we tried anyways!

Here is a picture of the invitation.  (Of course all our personal info has been removed)

The food table was a mixture of both of the themes, trying to use mostly black and white with a little pink and blue thrown in.  I bought these hello kitty cups and napkins,

and these hot wheels cups and napkins
placed on a white tablecloth with a black runner (which had yellow taped lines down the middle to look like a road).  I drew hello kitty on white balloons and printed out a checkered banner to display across the table.  (Sorry for the bad photo!  The party had already started when I started to take pictures)

I also filled a vase with marshmallows and added a number 5 candle as a table decoration.  It was inspired by this pin

I tried to keep most of the hello kitty decorations downstairs.  I drew and colored hello kitty posters, and made these giant tissue pompoms, as well as made our own hello kitty "pin the bow" game.  The kids colored their own bow and then we covered their eyes and they tried to stick the bow on!

Upstairs we had most of the hot wheels decorations.  I used this tablecloth as a poster on the wall.

Printed this banner from Over the big moon

We also had our bouncy house set up as well as this homemade racetrack for the hotwheels cars.  We made this track 1 hour before the party started so it was a little "put together" but the kiddos didn't mind at all.

And the cakes!  Oh the cakes.  Now I am not a cake decorator but my kiddos insist on having elaborate personal cakes so here is what I came up with.

The kiddos had a great time and made a lot of fun memories.  They are already starting to plan for next year! LOL!

Do you have any links to your birthday party celebrations?  Please add your links in the comment section below, I'd love to see them.  And do you have any ideas on how to incorporate different party themes for twins?  Would love to hear your ideas!
